MOUNT VERNON — “A Rose in Winter” is the theme of the annual holiday concert at Cornell College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in King Chapel. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
The concert features the Cornell Chamber Orchestra, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and College Choral; the Mount Vernon Community Choir; and the Cedar Valley Brass Quintet. The groups are under the direction of Martin Hearne and Lisa Hearne.
Selections include “Winter” from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons”; the first movement of Schubert’s Symphony no. 9 in C Major, known as “The Great”; and “A Spotless Rose,” by English composer Herbert Howells. Also on the program are two works by Johannes Brahms: his arrangement of the carol “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,” for orchestra, and “Ave Maria,” for women’s choir and orchestra. The concert closes with “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” for choir and orchestra, a hymn arranged by F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the St. Olaf Choir.
Following the concert will be a reception in the formal lounge of Bowman-Carter Residence Hall.
