Cornell College students returning from summer break will notice several changes across campus. Here is a rundown of summer work on the Hilltop.
Law Hall: Interior demolition work began toward conversion of this 1925 Beaux Arts-style building into a campus Technology Center, opening for the 2000-2001 academic year. Faculty offices for the departments of math, psychology and computer science have relocated to residence halls and West Science Center during renovation.
Commons: The interior of the main entrance was remodeled, with lighting upgraded. The Service Center, formerly in Law Hall, moved to The Commons lower level along with the Mail Center and faculty and staff mailboxes, formerly located in Old Sem. The game room was refurbished and furniture replaced in Harlan and three smaller dining rooms.
Ash Park: Installation began on an eight-lane all-weather track, due for completion in late October. Continuing work on the track, which surrounds the football field, means Cornell's football home-opener Sept. 4 against Central will be played at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Cable television: Access is available in each residence hall room, The Commons, Harlan House and Collin House, provided users supply a cable-ready television and coaxial connection. Future cable use will include channels to broadcast campus news, athletic events, or lectures and performances in King Chapel, plus link to other colleges.
Cornell College sign: A gift from the 1999 graduating class, a sign made of Stone City limestone was added at the corner of First Street West and Fifth Avenue South.
Pedestrian mall: Bollards have been posted at three mall entrances (between West Science and South Hall; between Bowman-Carter Residence Hall and The Commons; west of the library) to block vehicular traffic except during moving periods and as required during the year.
West Science: The physics department has relocated to the basement.
King Chapel: The clock face blown out by strong winds last November was replaced and metal trim repaired on the tower surrounding the face.
Cole Library: The Teaching Technology Center moved to the second level.
Prall House: Offices for the phone service and campus switchboard have relocated here.
Lighting: Installation of 17 new exterior fixtures will be completed this fall.
