HAIG lecture
May 4, 2011Michael Berube, Paterno Family Professor in Literature at Pennsylvania State University, will give a talk on May 12th “Life as Jamie Knows It.” The title of his talk alludes to his book, “Life As We Know It: A Father, A Family, and an Exceptional Child,” a blend of memoir and cultural studies that tells the story of his own son, Jamie, who “loves tacos, pizza, Bob Marley, and B.B. King,” and who also has Down Syndrome. Berube shows us how to “see”–and shows us how learning to see can in turn change our vision of society and ourselves. As a visiting Presidential Fellow this block, Berube is teaching a course on disability studies.
