Visiting Writer Gary Gilson
October 28, 2010Gary Gilson, distinguished visiting journalist for Block 2, will deliver a lecture on Oct 5th titled “Whose News? Whose Truth? Whose Ethics?” He will consider effects on the news business of technological change and political polarization and their impact on democracy. Gilson, whose students are reporting and writing on the quality of life among people who are struggling to find work in this economy, won five Emmy Awards for his work in public television in New York and Los Angeles. He served 14 years as executive director of the independent, nonprofit Minnesota News Council, which helps the public hold news outlets accountable for accuracy, fairness and ethical standards, and helps news outlets avoid lapses that produce complaints. Gilson has taught a course at Colorado College for the past 17 years. He lives in Minneapolis.
