Violinist Jennifer Koh, Cedar Rapids Symphony in concert Jan. 22 at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON – Violinist Jennifer Koh performs with the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra on Monday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m. in King Chapel on the Cornell College campus.

General admission is $8 at the door. This is the third concert in Cornell’s 2000-01 Music Mondays series.

Chicago area native Koh is a rising international star, performing in recitals and with orchestras all over the world. During the previous two years her performance appearances have included the Spoleto Festival in Italy, Carnegie Hall, Wolf Trap with the National Symphony Orchestra, Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in New York and Ravinia Festival in Chicago. “Technically, there’s nothing she can’t do on the fiddle, and her tone sings with an unforced lyricism that projects the sound of her 1727 Stradivarius throughout the hall with sumptuous clarity,” wrote a Baltimore Sun reviewer.

Koh will perform Barber’s Violin Concerto – a work so difficult its original performer declared it “unplayable” – with the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra; Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 complete the evening’s program. The symphony is under the direction of Christian Tiemeyer.

The final Music Mondays concert this season is March 19, featuring the Auryn Quartet, a string ensemble founded 20 years ago by members of the European Community Youth Orchestra. The Auryn Quartet will perform instead of the previously scheduled Amati Quartet.
